• Located at the mouth of the River Arade, opposite Portimao, is Ferragudo, an almost untouched fishing village, and a rare example of how the Algarve was twenty years ago.
  • Narrow cobbled streets lead up towards the village church, from where you can get great views across the rooftops across the Arade estuary.
  • Just south of the village are the remains of the Castelo de São João, a medieval fortress built on a rocky headland, to keep a watch for hostile ships.
  • The fortress is now in private hands, and was remodelled by the poet Coelho Carvalho. It is on a magnificent site, right on the sands of the town beach.
  • Ferragudo's main square, the Praça Rainha Dona Leonor, is a wide space dotted with cafes, and just west of here is a small fishing harbour with a few fish restaurants.

Ferragudo Attractions:

Praia Grande is just around the headland and is a wide, sandy beach lying within Portimaõ's harbour walls, and is a popular spot for beginner windsurfers and other watersports.

Just 2km further along the coast is Praia Pintadinho, a sandy cove with rock caves at either end.
